Prince William turns interviewer in Davos appearance with Attenborough

Prince William took on the role of journalist as he interviewed Sir David Attenborough at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. More than ever, he warned, we are out of touch with the natural world. "We already know that of course the plastics problem in the seas is wreaking appalling damage on marine life - the extent of which we don't yet fully know".

Asked if he had a message for the "powerful people in the room" in Davos, Switzerland, he said: "Care for the natural world".

Ms Ardern was on the panel Safeguarding Our Planet, chaired by former US Vice President Al Gore, that featured renowned natural history broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough.

In a 2016 BBC tribute programme honouring Sir David Attenborough's 90th birthday, Prince William referred to him as "national treasure" - so it was somewhat of a momentous occasion for the royal. But the maddening thing is that we now know how to deal with it - we've just got to do something.

On stage with William, there were lighter-hearted moments.

"The work to save the planet is probably, largely going to happen on our watch".

Prior to the interview, Kensington Palace said the Duke would talk to Sir David about his decades of work highlighting the importance of the natural world. We can use drones, we can use helicopters ... we can speed things up, we can slow things down, and film in the darkness.

Asked by William about the conflict between environmentalism, capitalism and economic success, Sir David said: "Still it is seen by some people that in fact humanity and industrialised humanity in particular is in opposition to the natural world".

According to the Guardian, Sir David said that back then, the world felt unexplored and exciting, particularly when visiting the Tropics for the first time.

Earlier, during the forum's Crystal Awards ceremony where he was honoured for his environmental stewardship, Mr Attenborough warned that Earth's "Garden of Eden is no more".

"When I started 60 years ago, in the mid-50s, to be truthful there was no one who thought we might annihilate the world".

"There's a source of great optimism there, we have the knowledge, we have the power, to live in harmony with that natural world". It's not just a question of beauty or interest or wonder; the essential ingredient of human life is a healthy planet.

"And if we damage the natural world, we damage ourselves".

Speaking on the sidelines of United Nations climate talks in Poland last month, Mr Attenborough said the U.S. president was "out on a limb" on his attitude to climate change.

Sir David was speaking in Davos where business leaders, politicians and NGOs are meeting this week to discuss the next iteration of globalisation.
