Nein! German minister pours cold water on PM's renegotiation plans

Nein! German minister pours cold water on PM's renegotiation plans

Senior Conservative lawmaker Graham Brady has put forward a proposal, known as an amendment, calling for the backstop to be removed and replaced with "alternative arrangements".On Monday, May told a private meeting of Conservative lawmakers that the government wanted them to support Brady's amendment, if it is chosen by the speaker of the House of Commons to be put to a vote.

European Union leaders have ruled out any renegotiation of the Brexit deal, but Mrs May urged Parliament to back a call for the border measure to be replaced by unspecified "alternative arrangements". The backstop would keep the U.K.in a customs union with the EU in order to remove the need for checks along the border between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland after Britain leaves the bloc. That's a provision that guarantees an open Irish border by tying Northern Ireland closely to the European Union potentially for years.

MPs will on Tuesday debate and vote on May's next steps, after the overwhelming rejection of her Brexit plan earlier this month, and have been proposing amendments seeking to shape the future direction of Brexit.

Sir Graham Brady, the influential head of the Conservative Party's 1922 Committee, wants to overcome the main hurdle to May's deal by replacing the "Irish backstop".

British lawmakers will vote on Tuesday on whether to try to take control of the Brexit process in a series of crunch votes that threaten to pile more pressure on Prime Minister Theresa May.

MPs put forward a string of amendments to modify the prime minister's Brexit plan after it was voted down by an historic margin on 15 January.

Weber said: "If there is now a unilateral attempt to reopen the agreement, the effect will be that not just the backstop has to be renegotiated - then the Gibraltar question, the question of how much money Britain has to pay for exiting, the question of citizens' rights will have to be renegotiated".

MPs approved the amendment by 318 votes to 310, a majority of eight.

One would give parliament the right to tell the government to leave the hated border arrangement should talks on a new EU-UK trade deal break down. Which about 20 of her ministers know and hate - so if she goes that route some or all of them quit today or at the latest in two weeks (Clark, Rudd, Gauke, Ellwood, Harrington and so on - even possibly Lidington and Hammond).

Lawmakers also rejected a no-deal Brexit, with 318 to 310 approving an amendment that would seek to take the option off the table.

Britain remaining in a customs union, or even the EU single market, could help reach a final agreement, Ms Weyand said, adding: "We need decisions on the United Kingdom side on the direction of travel".

This was one of the seven amendments to the Brexit bill being voted on in parliament.

But the former foreign secretary said his support was dependent on the PM making clear she will demand legally-binding commitments on the controversial Irish "backstop" in the text of her Withdrawal Agreement.

British lawmakers are debating Tuesday what to do next.

And Ireland's European Affairs Minister, Helen McEntee, cautioned: "There can be no change to the backstop".

"It is quite a challenge to see how you can construct from a diversity of the opposition a positive majority for the deal", the EU's deputy chief negotiator, Sabine Weyand, told a Brussels conference organised by the European Policy Centre think-tank.

Hardline Brexiteers have dismissed predictions of long lines at borders and food and medicine shortages as exaggerated talk created to delay and ultimately overturn the 2016 referendum, in which more than 17 million Brits voted to leave the bloc.
