The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, firefighters say.

There has been a major fire at Flamengo FC sports complex in Vargem Grande on Friday morning, one that has reportedly killed ten people.

Flamengo is one of the largest and most famous football clubs in Brazil, having graduated numerous top-ranked players including legendary attacking midfielder Zico.

After years of financial difficulties, Flamengo last year spent $6.2 million United States to expand the Ninho do Urubu training ground.

According to Reuters news agency, the site features accommodation for young players, several pitches, an aquatic park, a gym, a medical centre and a mini stadium. The facility, which translates to the "Vulture's Nest", is so called because the club's symbol is a vulture.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who joined the club from Flamengo past year, said: "Just remembering the nights and days I spent at the training center, it gives me goosebumps. May the Black and red nation have the strength and faith to overcome this moment".

Messages to Flamengo officials were not immediately answered. But rival teams across Brazil, including fellow Rio sides Botafogo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama, tweeted their solidarity. The derby match is now expected to be postponed.

As well as being one of Brazil's most successful football clubs, Flamengo also has basketball, rowing, swimming and volleyball teams. "May God comfort all".
