Border patrol apprehends group of 325 migrants near Lukeville

CBP officers assigned to the Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Pharr International Bridge came upon a tractor-trailer hauling a commercial shipment of fresh produce consisting of fresh bell peppers crossing into the USA from Mexico.

The mayor of Nogales, Arizona said the officer opened fire after the driver of a truck came barreling toward him and refused to stop.

Mexico's border officers surrounded the vehicle after its momentum carried it across the border, and they found two men inside, according to the Arizona Republic.

On Wednesday, Nogales City Council passed a resolution that would sue the federal government if the barbed wire was not removed.

City officials say Army troops installed more horizontal layers of the wire along the border wall last weekend. The U.S. military initially placed concertina wire along the top of the wall in November.

The group was spotted west of Lukeville by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter sent to investigate a possible campfire seen on a surveillance camera.

Nogales, a city of about 20,000 people, is largely reliant on Mexican shoppers and cross-border trade.

"Large bus loads of individuals are being bussed up to the border and we don't have any infrastructure in that area", the official said on the call with reporters.

Overall, illegal crossings at the southern border have dropped dramatically compared to previous decades but in recent years the number of families and unaccompanied children heading to the United States has increased.
