Canada jobless rate rises despite surge in employment

In Alberta, the unemployment rate in December 2018 was 6.4%.

(StatsCan warns with unadjusted data, one can not make month-to-month comparisons since different seasonal factors influence each month).

The region with the lowest rate in Alberta is Red Deer at 4.4 per cent while the province's overall is 6.8.

The unemployment rate in Northeast B.C. edged up to 5.5% in the first month of 2019.

"Definitely the headline job gain was very impressive", said BMO chief economist Douglas Porter.

However, using the jobless rate to assess the progress of the capital region's workforce over the past decade is a bit of an illusion. "We actually saw a record gain in private-sector payrolls".

There were an estimated 39,900 people employed in the region in a labour force of 42,100, according to the latest Statistics Canada labour force survey released Friday, February 8.

"As demonstrated in the newest results, higher wages, low unemployment and good jobs in British Columbia show that people are at the centre of our strong and stable economy".

Last week, Bank of Canada senior deputy governor Carolyn Wilkins said the country has been in a "puzzling" stretch of weak wage growth at a time when the job market has been experiencing one of its biggest labour shortages in years.

Another month, another unemployment rate increase in Prince George. The central bank stayed on the sidelines last month after five hikes since July 2017, and most analysts expect no action.

Canada added 30,900 full-time jobs last month and 36,000 part-time positions, the report also said. The trend of more people entering the workforce and either working or looking for a job also continued, with the labour force increasing from 22,500 to 23,700.

The details were relatively solid too, with the all of the jobs coming in paid employment and a slight tick up in wage growth despite Ontario's minimum wage increase falling out of the annual calculation.
