'I Fell Short': Jill Abramson Responds To Charges Of Plagiarism, Inaccuracies

Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson said that she's reviewing her book after accusations of plagiarism and defamation.

"I certainly didn't plagiarize my book", Abramson told Fox News' Martha MacCallum, pointing out that there are "70 pages of footnotes" in the book showing where she got her information.

Moynihan's tweets went viral Wednesday and brought a lot of attention to Abramson's book, which was mired in controversy even before it was published this month.

"There's plenty more-enormous factual errors, other cribbed passages, single or unsourced claims-but this should give a sense", Moynihan wrote after providing six examples of alleged plagiarism.

One of the passages cited by Moynihan is from a 2005 story in Ryerson Review of Journalism about Vice Media cofounder Gavin Miles: "In August 2003, McInnes wrote a column in The American Conservative, a magazine run by Pat Buchanan".

Abramson is a longtime journalist whose reporting has appeared in the Times and the Wall Street Journal, among other publications, and whose previous books include "Strange Justice", co-written with Jane Mayer. And in several of these cases, the language is too close for comfort and should have been specifically cited in the footnotes correctly - I'll explain to you why they weren't - or put in quotations in the book. "I think they don't like the portrayal of Vice". "I like their fresh approach to news".

In its statement Wednesday, Simon & Schuster added, "Jill Abramson's Merchants of Truth is an important, exhaustively researched and meticulously sourced book about the media business in a critical moment of transition".

"While trying to corroborate certain claims, I noticed that it also contained. plagiarised passages", he wrote.

Despite her clear denial on the show, she took to Twitter hours later and wrote she "endeavored to accurately and properly give attribution to the hundreds of sources that were part of my research" and that she took "seriously the issues raised and will review the passages in question".

The Washington Post reviewed end notes in the back of Abramson's book, which refer to pages where she used material that was not her own.

Earlier in the week, Abramson was on a press blitz for the book when she caused a kerfluffle of another sort. Yet, there "is no indication in the main text of the book showing which passages require attribution".

"I have articles to write and a book coming out in three weeks, so I have bigger shit to worry about", Frisch tweeted.

Abramson appears to be dodging any major responsibilities, however, promising that changes will be made in order to make her book "flawless".

Her book comes at a time of heightened scrutiny - and sometimes outright animosity - towards towards the media.
