Quebec mosque shooter sentenced to life with no parole for 40 years

A Canadian man who shot dead six worshipers at a mosque in Quebec City in 2017, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Alexandre Bissonnette, 29, pleaded guilty in March previous year to six counts of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder.

The Crown had recommended that the 29-year-old Bissonnette serve six consecutive sentences totalling 150 years.

However, Huot said under Canadian law he could only decide in 25-year tranches on parole, CBC News' Catou MacKinnon reported, and 50 years was "clearly excessive".

"You killed six of your compatriots whose only crime was to be different than yourself", Huot said in court.

In March, Bissonnette admitted to killing Khaled Belkacemi, 60, Azzedine Soufiane, 57, Abdelkrim Hassane, 41, Mamadou Tanou Barry, 42, Aboubaker Thabti, 44, and Ibrahima Barry, 39, in the January attack.

While reading his sentencing decision, the Quebec Superior Court judge said: "His crimes were truly motivated by race and a visceral hatred towards Muslim immigrants", but added that "punishment should not be vengeance".

"Time goes by quickly", he said.

The judge read out segments of his 246-page decision as a packed courtroom sat for six hours.

At the start of his trial in 2017, he said he had been suicidal, "swept away by fear and by awful despair", and deeply regretted his "unforgivable" actions.

While serial killer Bruce McArthur was handed 25 years of parole ineligibility in a Toronto courtroom this morning, the longest prison sentence in Canadian history could be handed out to another mass murderer.

Silver agreed that the Bissonnette sentencing is also likely to be appealed, and she believes that's a good thing. He noted that Bissonnette's mental health problems contributed to his actions and judged the danger of him reoffending as "moderate" at most.

Six men were killed and five were seriously injured, one of whom is now quadriplegic. He referred to numerous attacks in Europe as well as the 2014 shooting in Ottawa outside Parliament and said he "lost it" after learning Canada was preparing to take in more refugees. Several of the survivors and the victims' families have argued for a sentence longer than 25 years, noting the heinous nature of the crime and the lasting trauma it caused for the Muslim community.

But Renald Beaudry, a criminal lawyer who was at Bissonnette's sentencing, doesn't think the sentence would be easy to overturn.
