RIP John Dingell: Longest-serving member of Congress passed away on Thursday

John Dingell, a gruff Michigan Democrat who entered the U.S. House of Representatives in 1955 to finish his late father's term and became a legislative heavyweight and longest-serving member of Congress, died on Thursday at the age of 92.

- As word spread of former MI congressman John Dingell's death, those who were close to him took a step back at his life and the legacy he leaves behind. Dingell represented the powerful auto industry in southeastern MI and opposed many efforts to require safety equipment and fuel and emission standards.

He had said his single most important vote in Congress was for the sweeping 1964 Civil Rights Act, which among other provisions forbade discrimination in employment based on race and sex.

On June 7, 2013, his 20,997th day as a member of the House, Dingell became the longest-serving member of Congress.

He held office for 59 years. He retired in 2015.

President Trump also shared his condolences with Dingell's wife in a touching tweet paying tribute to his service.

Dingell revealed her husband spoke with former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in his final 24 hours. He represented his MI district for almost 60 years, from 1955 to 2015. He built a following of more than 250,000 users, dwarfing that of many current members of Congress.

Another probe led to the resignation of former Stanford University President Donald Kennedy after the school misused hundreds of millions of dollars in federal research funds. His rival on Energy and Commerce, Henry Waxman, a California Democrat, favored stronger controls on pollution-producing industries.

His peers in MI and beyond remembered Dingell following the announcement of his death. Sen.

Dingell ended the piece with a call for Americans to maintain high standards for those they elect into office.

"Friends and colleagues know me and know I would be in Washington right now unless something was up", Debbie Dingell said. "My people live and die by the success of the auto industry and manufacturing". Following his retirement in 2015, the seat managed to stay within the family once again as his wife Debbie ran and won the election for his vacant seat.

John David Dingell Jr. was born July 8, 1926 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Alongside his congressman father, Dingell was serving as a page on the House floor when President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan on December 8, 1941.

John Dingell worked as a House page from 1938 to 1943 and then served in the military for two years. Dingell, a World War II-era Army veteran, will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. "We finally, under your leadership, Madame Leader [Nancy Pelosi], we got the Affordable Care Act", Dingell said in March 2013.

In 2008, Waxman ousted Dingell from the chairmanship of the full committee.

Rep Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) described Dingell as a "titan of the House" and also gave a nod to his Twitter presence. Deaver was convicted of perjury and received a suspended three-year prison term and a $100,000 fine.

"In democratic government, elected officials do not have power", he said.
