Storm Erik hits Oldham bringing strong winds and heavy rain

The unsettled weather is expected to remain in parts of the United Kingdom over the weekend, with Northern Ireland and Scotland set to experience more strong winds and rainfall on Saturday.

Scott Bateman, chief executive of 9-Line Aviation and a retired member of the Royal Air Force, went on Twitter to explain the necessity of the manoeuvre, and why it was the safest option for the aircraft.

Samantha Loukes, network manager for Electricity North West, said: "Storm Erik has brought some severe gales to our region overnight and this morning, with 74mph winds recorded at St Bees in Cumbria".

It came after two men died in separate incidents on the roads in Devon and in Wales on Friday, the latter due to a falling tree.

Storms on Friday caused trees to fall on vehicles across the country.

Parts of the country could also experience hail and thunder.

'It's going to be another very windy one, particularly across northern England, Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern Wales.

A weather warning for wind on Saturday remains in place for England, while in Scotland heavy rain is expected into the afternoon, with a risk of flooding in some parts, the Met Office said.

The video footage shows the moment that the strong winds pull the pram that was carrying a baby into the oncoming traffic.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill warned that the weather could cause further issues on roads.

"But Erik could bring the possibility of 70mph gusts along more exposed coasts". Showers will continue to affect Atlantic coastal counties on Saturday night, but it will be largely dry with clear spells elsewhere.
