UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin slams FIFA’s Club World Cup proposals

UEFA is still waiting for more details on FIFA's ambitious plans for two new worldwide competitions, almost one year after they were first aired, the President of European soccer's ruling body said Thursday.

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin has criticised "a lack of respect" from top European bosses after 10 managers did not attend a meeting to discuss the use of video assistant referees (VAR).

Ceferin told UEFA's 55 member associations who elected him unopposed that "with unity restored" he was taking over with "fewer doubts and less scepticism than back then".

The 51-year-old Slovenian president of the European governing football body was a sole candidate running in the election, which was held during the 43rd Ordinary UEFA Congress in Italy's Rome.

Ceferin took over two and a half years ago after the corruption scandal that toppled his predecessor, Frenchman Michel Platini.

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has helped stave off the Club World Cup plan and is key to protecting the Champions League as UEFA's prize asset. We must continue to develop.

Ceferin says if clubs had split from the Champions League "they would have lost their status as great clubs in the hearts of the people".

He immediately promised a dramatic overhaul of European club competitions.

Ceferin excused Liverpool from attending as they were playing a Premier League match at West Ham on Monday, which ended 1-1 at London Stadium.

Ceferin acknowledged being relatively unknown when he was elected to replace Michel Platini, the France great who was banned by the Federation Internationale de Football Association ethics committee for financial irregularities.

In response FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who harbours his own aspirations of an expanded Club World Club, said that football's biggest players would be banned from the World Cup if they played in a breakaway European Super League.

"Limited terms of office, the publication of salaries, the creation of a Compensation Committee and the inclusion of independent members in a reinforced Governance and Compliance Committee are just a few of the common-sense reforms we have introduced", he said.
