California governor to draw down guard troops at border

With the deadline to prevent another partial government shutdown over border security talks just days away, California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to pull hundreds of National Guard troops from the state's southern border with Mexico in a clear rejection of the Trump administration's claims of security crisis. She withdrew most of her state's National Guard members from the border. Another 150 will expand the Guard's federally funded, state-coordinated Counterdrug Task Force (CDTF), and 100 will focus in on conducting counter narcotics search and seizure operations targeting transnational criminal organizations around ports of entry.

Governor Gavin Newsom's office said he was signing the order ahead of his State of the State speech on Tuesday.

The original mission, approved by former California Gov.

Although Trump has ordered thousands of military personnel to be deployed on the southern border, the National Guard remain under the command of authorities in each state.

In his upcoming State of the State address on Tuesday, the Democratic governor will say he is giving the National Guard a new mission so they do not participate in "political theater", the Los Angeles Times newspaper and other media reported.

Grisham, a Democrat, called Trump's frequent declarations of an immigration crisis at the border a "charade". More than 5,000 US military troops are also stationed at the border across the four states.

The step to rescind state authorization for the border deployment is a sharp rebuke of President Trump's continued warnings that undocumented migrants present a national security risk to the United States.

"We are living in a state and in a nation where people that are here without documentation commit crimes at a substantially lower level than native-born citizens". As NPR's Greg Myre has reported, the National Guard and other troops at the border are limited to providing surveillance and other support roles. He ordered that they not enforce immigration laws or participate in building a new border barrier.

Trump's demand for $5.7 billion to help build that wall was central to a 35-day partial US government shutdown that ended last month. "Which is why I have given the National Guard a new mission".

According to CBS News, the Democratic governor plans to keep about 100 of the 360 troops now deployed at the border, but not for immigration purposes. But both governors are outspoken Trump opponents.

"We have not been involved in the detention of immigrants".
