Former Chesterfield goalkeeper and World Cup hero Gordon Banks dies aged 81

We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him.

His status as an all-time great may have been sealed at the 1966 World Cup, but it was the save Gordon Banks produced to deny Pele four years later which became his defining moment on the global stage.

He represented Chesterfield, Leicester City and Stoke.

However, the former England stopper could have carried on for longer if not for a auto crash in 1972, forcing him to give up the game he loved.

Later that year he lost the sight in his right eye after a auto crash.

Banks is famously known for his outstanding save from Pele during England's quarter final match with Brazil in 1970.

One fan added: "RIP to an English football legend".

Gordon Banks, who has died aged 81, won the World Cup with England in 1966, and in his heyday was acknowledged to be the finest goalkeeper in the world.

The news of his death was announced in a statement from his family on Twitter.

Banks made 73 worldwide appearances and lifted the 1966 World Cup in England's 4-2 win over West Germany.

He also enjoyed a brief spell managing Telford United, before leaving in 1980.

Fellow ex-England worldwide Ray Parlour, meanwhile, hailed his save against Pele as the "best ever": 'More sad news in the football world.

"On behalf of everyone connected with England, I send my condolences to his wife Ursula, his family and friends".

"Very sad to hear the news that Gordon has died". Obviously we shared 1966 but it was more than that. RIP Gordon Banks", tweeted Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire, while Watford keeper Ben Foster said: "Had the pleasure of meeting you as an 18-year old-with my Dad, and him being completely star struck by you.

"We would ask that the privacy of the family is respected at this time".
