Gervonta Davis knocks our Hugo Ruiz in first round to retain title

Gervonta Davis had no problem adjusting to a much taller opponent in Hugo Ruiz and easily took him out in the first round to retain his WBA "Super" super featherweight title.

Davis beat Ruiz by first-round technical knockout after dropping the Mexican veteran with a right cross.

Davis' promoter Floyd Mayweather was sat ringside and observed the 24-year-old extend his record to 21-0-20KOs.

Fortuna could be in the running for the victor of Rances Barthelemy versus Robert Easter Jr., who will fight in April for the WBA lightweight world title Mikey Garcia gave up.

Surprised media members asked Mayweather for a clarification and he responded, "Yes, he's fighting Tenshin in an exhibition bout in Japan".

"I'm proud of Tank, and he's gonna stay active", Mayweather said.

And now, it appears his next fight will be in Japan against Nasukawa in an exhibition match, Mayweather told reporters last night following his fighter's victory.

Mayweather Promotions has plans to bring Davis home to Baltimore for a summer title defense, but Mayweather did not mention where specifically the May fight would take place or against whom.

"I knew it was coming".

The fight itself was half the story as the over 8,000 people in attendance, mostly came for Davis whether to cheer or boo, they were invested in his fight.

"We're talking about May [for Davis' next fight]", the 41-year-old said.

The Japanese was unceremoniously beaten by Mayweather on New Year's Eve, who needed just 136 seconds to force Tenshin's corner to throw in the towel.

Super welterweight Erickson Lubin retired Ishe Smith after dropping him four times, coach Eddie Mustafa Muhammad had seen enough and called the bout after three rounds, two of which Smith hit the canvas in.
