Great Firewall fears as Russian Federation plans to cut itself off from internet

The test was set in motion under a draft law, called the Digital Economy National Program, introduced by Russian Federation past year.

The test, expected to be carried out before April 1, will see whether online data can be passed between citizens and organizations inside the country without having to be routed internationally, the report said.

Russian Federation is considering "unplugging" itself from the global Internet temporarily as part of a test to avoid cyber-attacks, local media reported.

The draft law, entitled the Digital Economy National Programme, necessitates the country making sure its internet provision can continue to function in the event of external powers attempting to disable the country's service.

Russian legislators have given tentative approval to a draft legislation that could cut off Russia from the global internet. ISPs in the region are now preparing to test a system that would re-route web traffic in Russian Federation to exchange points controlled by Russia's telecom agency, Roskomnazor, ZDNet says. In 2017, Russian officials said they plan to route 95 percent of all internet traffic locally by 2020.

The government has agreed to provide funding towards these tests and goals, which are not now scheduled but are meant to take place before April 1.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and its allies have threatened to retaliate against Moscow's online aggression but are yet to take drastic action.

Russian Federation is planning to briefly disconnect from cyberspace to test its cyber-defences.

According to a report on the Russian news site RBC, the planned disconnection is meant to analyse the country's preparedness for a draft law mandating a "sovereign" internet.

As a result, the Russian government began working on defence tactics years ago.

Russian Federation will also establish its own national domain-name-server (DNS) system - a decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network, which will help to identify computers from which data is being added to the Internet.
