Ohio teen gets vaccinated despite parents’ concerns

Ohio teen gets vaccinated despite parents’ concerns

According to The Daily Mail, Wakefield published a study in 1995 in The Lancet that claimed children vaccinated against MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) were more likely to have autism.

"I had grown up with my mom and she had been very vocal about her opinions on vaccines and how she felt they were unsafe and caused very bad side effects", Ethan Lindenberger, an 18-year-old pro-vaxxer from OH told Fox and Friends on Monday.

Simpson says that's why it's important for everyone who can, to get vaccinated so they don't pass on the disease to those who may not be able to fight it off like her daughter. But his mother had an incendiary response to Ethan getting vaccinated, saying it was "a slap in the face ..." Here's what you need to know.

OH is one of several states where parents can make that decision.

Ethan Lindenberger gets first vaccine as Washington state struggles with a measles outbreak.

Lindenberger said he listened to what his mother told him about vaccines while growing up and believed it was common practice.

"I was doing it for my safety and the safety of others", he said.

But it wasn't until speaking with friends that he realized he was the only one out of his peer group to not have had the life-saving vaccinations.

Many cite the anti-vaxxing movement as the cause of recent infectious disease outbreaks across the country. People who have never received a measles vaccine are susceptible to the disease, which can be deadly. But this U.S. teen has defied his parents by... immunising himself against a host of diseases.

'But the diseases we developed vaccines for - like polio, which killed or crippled thousands of children - were selected precisely because they're so severe'. "This means that gaps at local level still offer an open door to the virus", says Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, Director of the WHO's Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen.

His mother, Jill Wheeler, was angered by his pursuit, she told Undark, an online science magazine.

'I was just blown away that you know, the largest health organization in the entire world would be written off with a kind of conspiracy theory-like statement like that'.

Ethan Lindenberger from OH is used to having arguments with his mother, like all teenagers are.

Lindenberger suggested that to empower teenagers and get more people immunized, states should lower the age of consent required for vaccinations instead of pushing for stricter immunization laws and dropping exemptions. But, due to their beliefs I've never been vaccinated for anything, god knows how I'm still alive, ' his post said.

The tension over vaccines started years ago, the teen told The Washington Post on Sunday, after he began to notice his mother posting anti-vaccination videos on social media. He also told guest host John Berman that once he was finally a legal adult he chose to get vaccinated, whether or not his parents approved.
