'Apex Legends' racks up 25 million players in its first week

Developed by Respawn Entertainment, a development studio Electronic Arts has owned since late 2017, Apex Legends features a similar battle royale-style of gameplay popularized by Fortnite. And "Apex Legends" became the most watched stream on Twitch this past weekend, garnering some 300,000 active viewers, or about three-times that of "Fortnite", according to Twitch data. The game debuted in October 2016 and was mostly praised for its single-player campaign. With no real leaks or hype to speak of before launch it still managed to rack up over a million unique players in the first eight hours and went on to hit the 10 million player milestone within 72 hours.

Apex Legends seems like it could be well on the way to breaking some major Twitch records.

The big update regarding the player count was that Apex Legends has amassed more than 25 million players with over 2 million concurrent players at its peak. Even sans titans and wall-running, Apex's snappy shooting and smooth sliding made enough players curious to know more about Respawn's earlier work. The grind can be long depending how much you win, but by saving up in-game currency or leveling up your rank, players have access to character and weapon skins, emotes, banners, and more. This is still exciting news for mobile gamers, though. Though EA's financial results over the last holiday season were disappointing (in part because of Fortnite's popularity), Pachter expects Apex Legends to contribute $100 million to EA's revenues in its next fiscal year.

There's always 99 problems to worry about while playing in a battle royale game, but Apex's loot system isn't one. Many have hoped that the developers will add the ability for smaller teams and solo play too.

And it does sound like Respawn is planning for some kind of Apex Legends crossplay support in the future.

"What a week! Since we launched Apex Legends last week on Monday we've seen the creation of an Apex Legends community that is excited, thriving, and full of great feedback and ideas", Zampella said.
