Newborn Found in Middle of Road

The incident was a "lot to take in", Fuentes Jr. said to ABC30.

I had my radio low, thank god.' He told the Fresno Bee.

Fuentes, 21, initially thought the newborn was an animal, or perhaps a toy. It was lying on its back, covered in its own feces, which had leaked through its onesie, he said. The man instead directed her to a safe surrender site - a fire station - or nearby Valley Children's Hospital down the road, and suggested she take the baby there. "It was just an bad situation", Fuentes said. Baby was squirming and you could hear it screaming too through the auto. "The newborn was discovered dressed only in a soiled onesie in weather just below 30 degrees".

The baby was cold but otherwise believed to be in good condition. That's when they discovered the umbilical cord still attached.

The newborn, who was only hours old, was rushed to Valley Children's Hospital and is now being treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Authorities are now investigating the identity and whereabouts of the mother.

Minutes before Fuentes called for help, a woman approached a man walking his dog in the area, the Madera County Sheriff's Office said.

Fuentes brought the girl into his auto, where he called 911. She asked him if everything was ok - and Fuentes responded that he just found a baby.

A newborn baby just hours old was found abandoned on a California country road in frigid temperatures, according to authorities.

Pogue said the situation was inexplicable and also noted that any newborn infants can be safely surrendered at any designated "safe surrender site" - a fire station or hospital - without any questions asked or the mother facing any charges.
