Red Bull launches Honda-powered RB15 in striking one-off livery

Max Verstappen gave the vehicle its first laps in a shakedown at Silverstone, the first time the team have run a Honda engine.

Red Bull unleashed a special-edition livery with the revamped paint job featuring substantially more red, but it is understood the former world champions will revert to their normal colours in time for the season-opening race in Melbourne on March 17.

Honda is hoping to profit from retaining the same power unit concept for a third straight season - the first time it has done so in the hybrid era, having abandoned its 2015/16 layout for its 2017 campaign with McLaren.

Pierre Gasly will partner Verstappen this season after stepping up from Toro Rosso - where he worked with Honda past year - and the Frenchman's experience convinces him the Red Bull-Honda pairing has potential.

Gasly joins incumbent and five-time race victor Max Verstappen, under contract with Red Bull through 2020.

The Silver Arrows and Red Bull will share use of Silverstone on Wednesday for shakedown runs of their 2019 cars.

The RB15 auto was launched with temporary red-and-black livery.

"I am very excited to get started as the off-season has been quite long", Verstappen said earlier. We've obviously been able to strike at venues that have suited the characteristics of our vehicle, winning four races last year - should have been five - and three races the year before. "I really want to feel how it upshifts, downshifts, how the driveability is, how much power there is".

"At the moment I am of course very optimistic, but also realistic". For sure there will be moments where, as a team, we make mistakes or it's not going as we want it to, but I think what is very important is that the team and Honda, we are pushing really hard to improve the development. While they will need to give Honda some time before they can realise their true potential, the data has already been very promising. Formula One is the pinnacle of motorsport.
