Calgary campaign calls for more rigid regulations on vaping and e-cigarettes

Across high school student users in 2018, any tobacco product use was reported at 32.4% for non-Hispanic whites.

"Vaping products successfully evaded the regulations that reduced youth tobacco initiation over the past 20-plus years, including age restrictions on purchases accompanied by retailer fines, advertising bans, taxes to increase the price, and the restriction on use of products indoors", Ylioja said.

Additionally, recent decreases in the number of students smoking cigarettes and cigars are stagnating, the CDC said.

"The skyrocketing growth of young people's e-cigarette use over the past year threatens to erase the progress made in reducing youth tobacco use", said CDC Director Robert Redfield. "There is an epidemic of e-cigarette use among our nation's youth, but the good news is that we know what works to combat this epidemic using proven, evidence-based strategies".

The rise in vaping was the single biggest jump in teen use of a tobacco product since the beginning of the survey in 1999, a new study finds.

"E-cigarettes could be playing a role in the patterns of use we're seeing among kids in terms of cigarette smoking", he said, adding, "It is possible that we are reinforcing and perpetuating dependency". Across middle school students a year ago, any tobacco product use was reported among 9.5% of Hispanics and 6.8% of non-Hispanic blacks, and it dropped to 6.6% of non-Hispanic whites and dropped again to 3.8% of non-Hispanic students of other races. In 2018, the CDC said there was an increase in tobacco use, prompted by e-cigarettes, by 4.9 million teenagers.

With the sharp uptick in e-cigarette use, the CDC is likely to find the trend of increased use among youth will not end in 2018. In addition, the frequency in which high school e-cigarette users were using these products increased by almost 40 percent between 2017 and 2018. JA: Sugar on fog, blizzard sticks, heady poppers - at least that's what my teenage neighbor calls them. "This is a real public health concern and something that we as university students are very concerned about". "That is not to say that all these kids are becoming addicted, but there is nothing good from a public health perspective that comes from more frequent use of any tobacco product". In January, the FDA warned that e-cigarettes could be pulled from the market entirely if youth use continues to rise.

The latest Vital Sign report is the first to reflect the impact of rising sales of Juul and other copycat products. In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 1 in 5 high school students had taken up the habit. "... Youth use of any tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, is unsafe".

Among high school students, 32.4% of non-Hispanic whites reported current use of any tobacco product in 2018, compared to 21.7% of Hispanics, 18.4% of non-Hispanics of other races, and 17.4% of black students.
